An Interview with Author Sapphire Phelan

Congratulations on your novel! Why don’t you tell us a little bit about Just Another ParaNormal Halloween. What is the title of your story in the book?

“His Girl.”

“His Girl” blurb:

My Girl was more than just a song for Evan McPhail and Aimee Saunders; it was the music of their love and passion for each other. For nothing could tear them apart, not even death.

Then Aimee vanished.

She returns to Evan thirty years later, no longer human. To the tempo of their passion, they prove that doesn't matter.

Sounds like an awesome love story. Where do you find your inspiration?

Believe it or not, a couple of years ago, I was listening to the radio in my car when My Girl by The Temptations came on. Suddenly, like a movie, I saw the entire story before my eyes. I rushed home and wrote it, and the rest is history as they say.

That leads to my next question. Do you listen to music when you write? If so, what music?

I don’t actually. I may have background noise from the little TV set in the office/sewing room, but most times, I mute it and write with the flow.

What are you writing now?

I just finished doing first edits on first draft of A Familiar Tangle With Hell, erotic urban fantasy sequel to my Prism Awards 2010 winner, Being Familiar With a Witch. It is the continuation adventures of Tina Epson and her Familiar/Demon lover, Charun.

Next, I will start on the third novella in the Beast Magic series, this time the hero and heroines are werewolves. Tentatively for now, the title will be Wolf Magic.

Sounds fabulous! Do you have an excerpt from your book that you’d like to share?

EXCERPT:

Aimee woke up. It was still dark and with a glance aside at the clock on the table on her side of the bed, she saw it was midnight.

Oh no, my parents are going to have a fit.

Untangling herself carefully out of Evan’s arms, she slipped off the mattress to frantically search for her clothing. After hastily dressing, she grabbed her purse and coat from a chair. She paused by the bed and stared down at Evan. How much she loved him. He looked so innocent—so unguarded lying there. And yet, he had brought her fully into her womanhood. Bending down; she brushed a butterfly kiss to his cheek.

His auburn hair tousled, a wisp of it curling down and settling against his left eyebrow, moving with each breath he took. Thick, dark lashes feathered against his freckled cheeks. He mumbled her name in his sleep as he rolled over onto his back.

“Nothing will keep us apart, Evan. Nothing.”

She tiptoed out of the room, closing the door behind her.

Aimee paused for a second. Staring back at the door, almost hidden by the shadows of the night, she felt a strange tightening of her heart. It was as if something warned her to go back, back to the bed and Evan’s arms.

Shaking her head at her silly imaginings, she knew she had to be in class in a few hours. Besides, if she stayed, her parents would figure out what she and Evan had been doing. She certainly didn’t want that. So she ambled away from the motel and decided to take the shortest route home through the nearby woods.

Wow, these woods sure look different then they do in the daylight. Wait a moment . . . was that a shadow? Is someone out there? It doesn’t matter. I got to get home quickly before Mom and Daddy discover how late I am. If they figure out I didn’t stayed late at the party. . . Yeah, they may love Evan like a son, but they’re old-fashioned about the idea of their daughter sleeping with him before the wedding.

With only a crescent moon and a few sprinkling of stars in the night sky, the light was poor in the woods. Aimee had to be careful where she stepped because of unseen roots or debris scattered along the path. The night wind picked up. She felt a prickling at the back of her neck, almost like a warning. Pausing, she glanced over her shoulder. Nothing moved in the darkness. The trees stood there like silent guards, shadow-like and alert. Something about the night seemed wrong, though. As fear electrified under her skin, Aimee quickened her walk. Even though she told herself she was being silly, she wanted nothing more than to get out of the woods as fast as her feet could carry her.

Too late, she remembered the articles in the newspaper about bodies being found, drained of blood. Her blood ran cold as she realized most of those bodies had been found in these very woods.

Without warning, something slammed into her back and forced her to the ground. Pain lanced through her as rocks scraped her face and hands. When she opened her mouth to scream, dirt filled it. Instinct made her get up, but something heavy kept her down. She had felt scared earlier, but that was a shadow to what filled her now.

A voice, deep and horrible, whispered into her ear. “You smell good; your fear fills me with anticipation.”

Panicking, Aimee tried to fight off her attacker, but something thumped the back of her head hard. Pain exploded, and her vision crossed as a headache began to pound. Dazed, she found herself being lifted off the ground by a pair of muscular arms. She tried to peer into her captor’s face, but the darkness and pain obscured it. Only twin red lights glowed where his eyes should be.

Her attacker snickered. “Happy Halloween.”

She screamed just before the dark wave of unconsciousness splashed over her.

I’ve got chills already! Thanks for sharing that with us and visiting my blog.
